Policy

Work Experience (WEX) is a training activity in the public or private sector under close supervision of the activity provider. The provider helps provide basic job skills, enhances existing job skills in a position related to the participant’s experience, or provides needed Community Service that will lead to unsubsidized employment. Unpaid WEX must be limited to 12 months.

WEX participants are eligible for all supportive services, including child care, transportation, and ancillary expenses.

There is a maximum number of unpaid WEX or Community Service hours allowed based on the minimum wage requirement of Fair Labor Standards Act.

Background

WEX activity is intended to provide work behavior skills, enhance existing job skills in a position related to the participant’s experience or recently acquired skills, acquire new skills and employment references to use when seeking salaried employment.

Definitions

WEX

An activity in which a participant receives non-paid experience in a public or private agency.

CalFresh Program Formula

The CalWORKs grant plus CalFresh benefit amount (if any) divided by the State minimum wage then further divided by 4.33 (the average number of weeks per month).

Requirements

Maximum hours of unpaid WEX are determined by combining the CalWORKs grant amount with the CalFresh portion allotment (if any) and then dividing the total by the State minimum wage. The total is then divided by 4.33 to determine the weekly maximum hours. The WTW 15, Simplified CalFresh Program Unpaid Work Experience and Unpaid Community Service Hours Worksheet should be used for this purpose. If the number of hours fall short of the family’s hourly requirement, a concurrent activity must be added.
