680 Self-Initiated Program Private Schools

Policy

Any degree, certificate, or educational/training program offered by a private postsecondary school must be accredited and approved or exempted by the appropriate State regulatory agency to be considered as a possible school for an approved Self-Initiated Program (SIP) activity. If the school is not approved or exempted by the appropriate State regulatory agency, the participant must be referred to the next appropriate WtW activity.

Private School

A for-profit school operated by private businesses/entities.


Requirements

Accreditation, Approval, or Exemption

Private schools that participants self-enroll in may be approved under the following conditions:

  1. The private school must already be registered with Intrastate Training Resources and Information Network (I-TRAIN); or
  2. The private school must be accredited and approved or exempted by:
    • Approved/Exempt by the Bureau for Private Post-Secondary Education (BPPE) (https://bppe.ca.gov/search/ );
    • Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College & University Commission (WSCUC)(https://www.wscuc.org/directory/ ); or another accrediting agency that is approved to provide accreditation by the U.S. Department of Education; or 
    • Approved by Consumer Affairs (https://search.dca.ca.gov/ ).
  3. All SIP criteria must be met. Refer to GAIN Chapter 600 SIP Evaluations.

Acceptable Documents

  1. Documentation showing accreditation status of the private school from the appropriate regulatory board/agency, BPPE, or WSCUC website; or
  2. The GAIN 64, Bureau for Private Post-Secondary Education (BPPE) Exemption Status Verification Request Letter.
